I hope you get a pleasant interlude in the never ending suckfest that is life!

I think the challenge with writing comes when we actually admit to our spouse that we want to do this thing, like for money. Then we feel pressure to produce something of value in that one hour we get free to write. At least for me. My husband has never really been in touch with his creative side, so I struggle to make it look like I'm doing something worthwhile.

But we have to get it into our heads that we have to show up at page and "write like a mo-fo" because one has to get out the 90% crap to get to the 10% that is good/of value. So 90% of the time it is painful and it is crap. But 10% of the time we get gold. Or something. So all that practice/habit building has value too. I swear it sounded better the first time I wrote it.

I was wondering if you've heard of "morning pages?" They come from Julia Cameron, who wrote The Artist's Way and Vein of Gold, etc.

"Morning Pages are three pages of longhand, stream of consciousness writing, done first thing in the morning. There is no wrong way to do Morning Pages-- they are not high art. They are about anything and everything that crosses your mind-- and they are for your eyes only." (From The Artist's Way website.)

They are supposed to unlock your creativity. You aren't even supposed to read them over until at least a couple of months have passed. That way you are purging muck that might have shown up in your writing otherwise. I've never been able to do them regularly. They are painful. But I always keep their purpose in mind when I haven't been "showing up at the page" and, as Anne Lamott says, "writing shitty first drafts."

Keep up the daily practice!

P.S. If you are stepping on avocados all the time, you must have an avocado tree?! Lucky you! We had one in our backyard when I lived in California and I really took it for granted.Jessicahttp://thejoyfulhousewife.netnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4064423391902022487.post-22534030432506134122011-06-07T09:45:41.029-07:002011-06-07T09:45:41.029-07:00Happy birthday!

Let me put the baby down for his nap and hopefully I'll remember what I wrote.Jessicahttp://thejoyfulhousewife.netnoreply@blogger.com
