The Great Post-It Note Debacle

My sister-in-law Mandy and I were hanging out the day before Thanksgiving. I left her in the car with Charlie while I ran into the store to grab something really fast. When I came back, there was a sea of Post-Its decorating the interior of my car.

(Please pardon the poor quality of these photos.)

On the driver's side door:

"Hi Leslie"

On the steering wheel:

"Was it fun in there?"

On the dash:

"It's a little windy out there"

On the rearview mirror:

"That's Chuckles back there. He totally wrote all of these notes."

On the top of Charlie's car seat:

"Mandy tried to stop him. I mean me."

On the gear shift thingie:

"Make sure you choose R not D."

On my CDs:

"Stop licking your CDs. People will think you're a Twitard." [I may or may not have been licking my CDs earlier that day. Long story.]

On my drink:

"Ash (sic) [meaning our cat Woogas who loves to steal straws from people's drinks] wants your straw."

On my little mushroom hanging from the rearview mirror:

"I like your mushroom."

Obviously, given our penchant for silliness and mutual love for Post-Its, Mandy and I get along very well.

Stuff I'm Diggin'

Four Ways in Which My Life Is Just Like Pac-Man's.

By John Crownover

1. Ever-present wail of sirens
2. Relentlessly pursued by ghosts
3. Four special pills daily keep ghosts at bay
4. Occasionally eat some fruit

***

***

And I'm diggin' the support you guys have given me regarding Charlie's sleep issues. CIO is such a hot-button issue (understandably so). There's a lot of judgment that goes on, and sometimes CIO is considered by others to be similar to abuse or neglect. I guess there's no room for the possibility that people can only live a severely sleep-deprived existence for so long. But anyway, thanks.

***

And that's all I got. I've had no time to really peruse the internetz this week. Maybe you could tell me some good stuff you've found?

My First Mother's Day

Today was Mother's Day, my first Mother's Day, to be exact. I was awakened by two text messages from out of state friends wishing me a happy Mother's Day. Roy made me breakfast and then surprised me with a necklace:

Of course, I cried because the gift was so unexpected and so sweet. It signifies a mother having an open heart.

We spent the majority of the day at Roy's grandparents' house, and once again, I was surprised with cards and flowers and cookies and more text messages. (I also surprised myself by throwing up for the very first time during my entire pregnancy, but that's another story.) I went swimming and did karaoke with various family members. It was a good day.

I do consider myself a mom already, and it was really cool to see that other people seem to feel the same way. I know that it's not the same as having an outside baby, but I do think that pregnancy is the beginning of motherhood. I have yet to meet my Charlie, but I am already so honored and privileged to be his mother.

Anyway, today I couldn't help but think of all the women out there who struggle with infertility and/or pregnancy loss. I have people in my life who have been dealing with both, and my wish for them is for them to have their child(ren) by the time Mother's Day 2010 rolls around. In the meantime, my thoughts are with them, all of them. I can't exactly identify with what they've had to deal with, but I can only imagine the heartbreak.

Of course, I also spent a lot of time thinking about my own mom and what a wonderful and positive influence she's been on me. There is no one in the world like her, and even though she drives me crazy sometimes, truthfully she is my best friend (aside from Roy). She has always supported me no matter what, even during my punk-ass bitch stages. No matter how old I get, sometimes I still just need her. I hate that I haven't gotten to spend a Mother's Day with her in so many years.

To sum up this post, I thought I'd share this awesome video that Kari posted on her blog earlier today:

(If you haven't seen the video that precedes it, click here.)

Happy Mother's Day!

The best part of our first childbirth class

We watched this tonight as an intro to our first childbirth class. Both videos are about five minutes long, but they're hilarious and so worth watching.

Ezekiel 25:17

The other night I saw this:

And it reminded me of how much I love this:

Particularly this:

So Roy and I sat down and watched the movie, and I had a chocolate shake that wasn't a $5 shake and thought about how awesome it would be to be Samuel L. Jackson.

The end.

Oh em gee, it's Election Day!

Holy crap! I thought this day would never get here.

I'm not sure if it's obvious, but I voted for Obama.

(Man, I look tired/chubby/pimply. Please ignore my face, and focus on my shirt!)

And I don't know about you, but I'm ready for some change.

But obviously John McCain has a lot to offer as well.

In addition to this monumental election, I get to leave work early for my three-month Lasik follow-up appointment, which means that afterward I get to come home and 1) take a nap and 2) obsess over the election.

I'd like to say that having eye surgery was some of the best money I've ever spent, mainly because I don't have to walk around looking like this guy:

And having good vision is a big plus, too.

Happy Election Day, everyone! And don't forget: "Live your values. Love your country. Vote."

October 25, 2008

Just in case I haven't posted enough about Prop 8...

I stole from Kari again...

[sarcasm]

Here are some wonderful reasons to vote YES on Prop 8!

1. Homosexuality is not natural, much like eyeglasses, polyester, and birth control.

2. Heterosexual marriages are valid because they produce children. Infertile couples and old people can't legally get married because the world needs more children.

3. Obviously, gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

4. Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage is allowed, since Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage was meaningful.

5. Heterosexual marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are property, blacks can't marry whites, and divorce is illegal.

6. Gay marriage should be decided by people, not the courts, because the majority-elected legislatures, not courts, have historically protected the rights of the minorities.

7. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

8. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

9. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

10. Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why single parents are forbidden to raise children.

11. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and we could never adapt to new social norms because we haven't adapted to things like cars or longer lifespans.

12. Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a "separate but equal" institution is always constitutional. Separate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as seperate marriages for gays and lesbians will.

[/sarcasm]

Thanks again, Kari.

That's what's up.

I saw this on Kari's blog and found that it was just what I needed after a long, overly emo week.

September 26, 2008

Happy Friday!

I haven't written in a couple of days, and I can really tell the difference. Truthfully, I have much to say but not much that I want to say. So instead, here are some interesting things I've discovered on the interwebz lately.

I got the below picture from boing boing and find it devastatingly sad.

I'm not sure where I got these other pictures...

...but this one is a soap ad.

And these are old-school Marlboro ads. Babies and cigarettes - what a combination.

And my sister-in-law sent me an awesome set of pictures from an anti-Palin rally held in Alaska. I've tried to watch several videos of Palin lately and am always overwhelmed by what an idiot she is. She may be a woman, but she sure as hell doesn't speak for me. As a matter of fact, I think I should be the VP nominee instead of her. I'm definitely more intelligent, and I probably have more experience.

Anyway, if you don't want me to be the VP nominee, by all means please vote for WeeMo.

Gawd help our country if McCain gets elected.

And not to leave things on a totally shitty note...

That cracks me up every time.

A more substantial post will come later. Thanks for all for your advice on my school situation (I decided to take the class) and your thoughtful and kind comments on our testing (I am feeling much better now).

See you soon!

Things That Make Me Go "Wow"

1) Web Without Sense is a collection of complaints about websites. Needless to say, it's hilarious. Here's a good one:

2) And in keeping the Grammar Nazi spirit alive, Brandy made my day when she sent the picture below to me.

3) This video totally brings on the awesome.

4) And this one is so sweet.

5) The Book of Leviathan by Peter Blegvad is a visual treat for anyone who likes to think. This is a collection of comic strips featuring Leviathan, a faceless and overly philosophical baby, his stuffed rabbit, and the family cat. The gang go on many adventures, including a long trip to Hell, in this dark comedy of a story.

6) Love, love, LOVE this video. It's the funniest thing I've seen in awhile.

7) I also love this penis iceberg. Article here.

8) Lastly, I got my computer back! I've spent the last couple of days trying to get it the way it was before I took it in to be fixed (minus the spyware, of course). I'm still trying to import all my email, as well as figuring out how to convert my external hard drive to a more stable format. It's a work in progress, that's for sure. But hopefully I will have some new photos to share soon and will be able to be a better blog commenter.

engrish funny

I've spent pretty much all day glued to CNN and decided I needed a nice break in the way of FAIL blog.

This killed me.

Then I discovered engrish funny, not to be confused with engrish.

Oh em gee.

But maybe I should say oh em eff gee.

September 11, 2008

This is worth a read.

It's funny. And if I say it's funny, it must be true!

Things That Make Me Go "Wow"

This is a collection of cool things I've come across lately.

1)

2) I found this on Kari's blog. Hilarious.

3) The Head Project!

(Image by the ever-so-lovely and talented Elle Moss.)

4) Things I've seen around town that have made me smile:

5) Angelina and I embraced our inner dancing queens when we saw Mamma Mia! today. What a great movie! I haven't been able to stop dancing yet. I'm even dancing as I write this. Just in case you've been living under a rock, here's the trailer:

6) Jenn showcased her radness when she sent me an edible arrangement as a thank you for taking her engagement pictures. Yummy, pretty, and incredibly thoughtful! Thanks so much, Jenn!

I have (what feels like) a bazillion posts in progress, so I'm going to try to catch up on those this weekend.

Just when I thought today couldn't get any stranger...

My friend Jessica and I were driving through the Rubio's parking lot on our way back to work after having lunch and saw this middle-aged guy standing by his car talking on his cell phone.

He was wearing a white T-shirt, black dress shoes, black socks, and tight white boxer briefs. And that's it. I saw everything. I didn't just throw up in my mouth a little; I threw up in my mouth a lot.

What is it about today? What is it about the Rubio's parking lot?

Jesus Freak

I've had the same cell phone number for close to seven years now, and I always get phone calls for someone named Jesus (Hay-soos, not Geezus). I usually tell them they have the wrong number because I'm nice and neighborly like that.

Today this guy called and asked for Geezus. I cracked up immediately.

Me: "This is Geezus."
Him: "Hi Geezus, this is Eric from Bank of America. I was calling to see if you were interested in our payment protection plan..."
Me: "I'm sorry, this isn't really Geezus. It was a joke. I thought you were joking when you asked for Geezus. You know, because of Jesus Christ?"
Him: "Oh."

*click*

Apparently Eric isn't familiar with the Spanish dialect. He also doesn't seem to appreciate interactions with heathens.

i heart youtube, volume ten

I'm going to stop doing my "i heart youtube" posts for awhile or forever, depending on how I feel, so I thought I'd share some of my favorite GI Joe PSAs. These just never get old for me.

Double Exposure #9

I am so glad it's Friday. Not only is the weekend upon me, but I get to pick which blogs to post about.

1) Take a look at Business Guys on Business Trips. Anyone who's worked in an office will be able to relate to this. I love this one in particular:

Sadly, this very thing happens in my office quite often (and I'm sure it happens in every other office as well).

2) Faces in Places never fails to make me smile. Once you see these pictures, you will never be able to look at everyday objects without looking for their faces. (Well, I can't, at least.) With that in mind, allow me to introduce you to....

Duck Pond

Bug Eyes

Shock Rock

I've enjoyed going these regular weekly posts on this blog. It's fun sharing what I've been reading, and I especially love it when people tell me about other cool blogs. I think I will keep this feature around for awhile. I may be getting rid of the i heart youtube feature and replacing it with something else. I haven't decided what to replace it with, though. That's where you come in! What do you find interesting enough to tune in every week for? (Good gawd, that's a horrible sentence, but the alternative sounds just as bad.)

I was considering doing a day in the life post (accompanied by pictures, of course), kind of like they do on flickr, but I honestly don't know if the mundane details of my life are very interesting. Actually, I'm pretty sure they're not, but I suppose it's all in how I present myself, right?

Or I could do a weekly photo collage, or just a weekly post full of photos. Or I can keep the youtube feature. Or I can leave it and do nothing at all. The possibilities are endless!

Let me know what you think, though. You guys are the ones that read this thing.

Tuesday Discoveries

-I saw this awesome license plate on my lunch break.

-I finally figured out what to do about my name change issue. I found out today that the state will definitely not amend our marriage license to reflect Roy's name change, which means that in order to change my name, I will have to go through the courts. This will cost us around $400, but to be perfectly honest, I am happy to pay it if that's what it takes. You'd think I'd be upset about this, but no, I'm just relieved to finally have a definitive answer and to know what to do. I guess it's a good thing that I put off requesting the amendment, being as it wouldn't have done us any good anyway.

I would also like to say something that I will probably never say again, so take note: I am actually grateful that I work in a legal office, because if it wasn't for some of my co-workers doing some digging on this issue, I never would have known for sure what to do. Also, based on this experience, I would also like to say that County employees are generally useless. I don't blame them entirely; it's the bureaucracy that causes all the miscommunication and ignorance.

And lastly, those of you who are getting married and wanting to both change your names, please have your future husband change his name before you pick up your marriage license. Honestly, it would have saved us so much time, money, and sanity had we done it this way. That was our original plan, but someone *coughRoycough* decided to wait until a month before our wedding to file for his name change (and to be fair to my long-suffering husband, the County employee he spoke to did say that everything would be fine if his name change went through after our wedding). Try to give it at least a couple of months for the whole process to be completed, because it takes awhile.

-I often check out the organized collection photo pool, and today this photo in particular made me happy.

-I have finally figured out how to control the temperature in my office. Last week, I was freezing, so I covered up my A/C vent (which is right over my chair) with a piece of cardboard. Yesterday afternoon, though, the heat coming in through my window was sweltering. So today I cut a small rectangle in the cardboard, and now I have controlled A/C. Yay. It's the little things, right?

i heart youtube, volume nine

Some more random videos that I (re) discovered this week.

from A Cup of Jo:

from Boing Boing (this one is kind of "gross," but I thought it was very cool):

And lastly, this one is hilarious. It's one that Roy came across and showed me a long time ago.
