Lullaby and good night, you're a mother's delight...
Tonight is Charlie's first night in his crib in his room. Alone. All this time he has slept in the same room as us, and last night, he even slept in our bed with us for awhile.
We are only moving him to his crib because we have no other choice. We just realized that he weighs too much to sleep in the bassinet of the pack 'n' play. We talked about moving his crib into our room, but there just isn't enough room. So his crib in his room it is. Sob, seriously. I was near tears during his bath tonight.
I never thought Charlie would stay in the pack 'n' play for long. I figured we'd have him in his crib by the time he was two months old, but moving him never felt right to us. It still doesn't. I'm going to miss him so much. I love having him right near us.
In honor of my little boy getting too damn big too damn fast, I thought I'd share one of my favorite lullabies. It's sung by Jewel (don't hate), and it totally makes me cry.
Damn, this motherhood gig is tough.

The Amazing Ducklesman and His Cute Top Gum Take the World by Storm!
One of Charlie's best features (in my opinion) is his very prominent top gum. You can see it perfectly from certain angles, and I never fail to say, "Look! There's his gum!" My sister-in-law Mandy and I even have a joke that Charlie someday is going to be a star in a movie called (you guessed it) Top Gum.
So, anyway. About the gum. I adore it. I love it so much that I "made up" a song about it and sing it to Charlie a million times a day. Once I got his reaction to it on video. And the video happens to showcase Charlie's top gum quite nicely.
(Note: Charlie's newest nickname is Duckles. We've always called him Chuckles, but within the last month or so I started calling him Chuckle Duckles, which soon got shortened to Duckles. Hence, the Ducklesman song in the video.)

Friday Cuteness!
Happy Friday, everyone! I'm all dressed up (in Leslie terms), ready to go with two homies to see RENT!, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm wearing a postpartum girdle of sorts under my clothes. It does a lot for smoothing out the ol' muffin top.
So earlier I was in the kitchen washing dishes (more on that later), and I saw Charlie enjoying the wonders of discovering his feet. He actually started sort of playing with them last night but has been doing it a lot today. Of course, Mao had to get in on the action. I caught it all on video, because that is just how technologically advanced I am.
(If you're wondering why Charlie's chin is so very shiny, it's because it's covered in drool!)
About the dishes. Our dishwasher hates us and is leaving lots of soap residue on our dishes. Unfortunately, it is so tough to get it off once it's there. I've tried a multitude of things: different soap, soaking the dishes in almost boiling water (without soap), running some vinegar and Charlie's Soap in the dishwasher (separate cycles, of course). Got any ideas?

My First Mother's Day
Today was Mother's Day, my first Mother's Day, to be exact. I was awakened by two text messages from out of state friends wishing me a happy Mother's Day. Roy made me breakfast and then surprised me with a necklace:

Of course, I cried because the gift was so unexpected and so sweet. It signifies a mother having an open heart.
We spent the majority of the day at Roy's grandparents' house, and once again, I was surprised with cards and flowers and cookies and more text messages. (I also surprised myself by throwing up for the very first time during my entire pregnancy, but that's another story.) I went swimming and did karaoke with various family members. It was a good day.
I do consider myself a mom already, and it was really cool to see that other people seem to feel the same way. I know that it's not the same as having an outside baby, but I do think that pregnancy is the beginning of motherhood. I have yet to meet my Charlie, but I am already so honored and privileged to be his mother.
Anyway, today I couldn't help but think of all the women out there who struggle with infertility and/or pregnancy loss. I have people in my life who have been dealing with both, and my wish for them is for them to have their child(ren) by the time Mother's Day 2010 rolls around. In the meantime, my thoughts are with them, all of them. I can't exactly identify with what they've had to deal with, but I can only imagine the heartbreak.
Of course, I also spent a lot of time thinking about my own mom and what a wonderful and positive influence she's been on me. There is no one in the world like her, and even though she drives me crazy sometimes, truthfully she is my best friend (aside from Roy). She has always supported me no matter what, even during my punk-ass bitch stages. No matter how old I get, sometimes I still just need her. I hate that I haven't gotten to spend a Mother's Day with her in so many years.
To sum up this post, I thought I'd share this awesome video that Kari posted on her blog earlier today:

A Week's Worth of Movies
I was slacking off on my movie watching, and then I went on maternity leave. I've been going a bit crazy with the TV/movie watching since. Here are the movies I've watched in the past week:
1) The Man Who Wasn't There - The only Coen Brothers movie I've seen that I've actually liked
2) Ghost World - I've seen this one before, and frankly, it's never won me over. It can be interesting, but its interestingness is overshadowed by its blahness.
3) Single White Female - A good 90s thriller and another movie I've seen before. I have to admit, though, that I was totally distracted by the disaster that was Bridget Fonda's hair.
4) Rachel Getting Married - I thought the acting in this little indie film was great, although some scenes just went on for way too long. It was also unexpectedly heavy, which was a nice surprise.
5) The 40-Year-Old Virgin - Hilarious. I laughed the whole way through.
6) Hotel Rwanda - Really good. Another heavy one, but worth watching.
7) Role Models - Hilarious, again.
8) The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Definitely on the long side, but I enjoyed this. It was an interesting story.
9) Go - I liked this one a lot. I can't believe I'd never seen it before.
I tried to watch The Hour of the Wolf, one of those artsy-fartsy foreign films that are soooooooooo deep, but I just didn't have the headspace or the attention span to really enjoy it. Thus, I turned it off after thirty minutes, because I was bored, frankly.
And of course I've made some time for some awesome episodes from shows like One Tree Hill (current season), Dollhouse (current season), Grey's Anatomy (fourth season), and Beverly Hills 90210 (fifth season). I love me some cheesy dramas.
Oh, and in the spirit of movie-watching, here are a couple of videos of movie trailers that have been recut to make them look like completely different movies (originally seen on Maegan's blog).
The Shining as a heartwarming comedy:
Mary Poppins as a horror movie:

The Laramie Project
I watched The Laramie Project today. We've had the movie at home for weeks, gathering dust by the TV, and I've often asked Roy if he wanted to watch it.
"Too depressing," he said.
And that's true. It's the story of Matthew Shepard and the hate crime committed against him in October 1998. It's not exactly light and fun. But in the spirit of what today stands for, I decided to watch it. And I'd recommend it.
The most emotional part was the dramatization of Dennis Shepard's (Matthew's father) speech, which can be heard in the video below:

At the risk of sounding trite, I'll say this: I will never forget Matthew Shepard or his legacy of social justice and equality.

Quaint Christmas: Days Two and Three of Our Christmas Vacation
Both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were laid back days. Considering that my uncle's weakness from his illness earlier in the year, my brother's kidney stones, and my pregnancy, we weren't in the best shape to go out and party. Instead we stayed in for most of both days.
On Christmas Eve, we decorated the tree...
...ate candy...
On Christmas Eve, we decorated the tree...

...gave Buster lots of love...
...took Buster for a walk and took lots of blurry-on-purpose pictures...
...looked at the Christmas lights...
...and opened gifts!
It was a small, quiet Christmas Eve with few gifts, but it was still good.
On Christmas morning, we crowded around the laptop and showed my mom and uncle a couple of our favorite videos.
We hung out and took it easy...
...ate an awesome lunch, where I consumed three helpings of my mom's mashed potatoes...
...napped and then later took Buster out for his evening walk...
...and then came back to my uncle's house, where we had a low-key evening of movie watching and interweb surfing.
It was a good Christmas, just the way I wanted it. No muss, no fuss. Incidentally, the muss and fuss came the next day - with a vengeance.

Vote/Don't Vote
I actually don't like this video, but I like the message. So here it is. Vote, people!
We don't have TV channels at home (gasp!), but we still managed to watch part of the VP debate at a friend's house last night. Wow. Palin is a very unintelligent person. I shudder to think about McCain getting elected and then dying in office, thereby leaving the fate of the US in the hands of that woman. A woman who winks in the middle of a debate!
I'm scared of what the future holds for this country. This last month before the election is going to be very interesting.
I guess I have more to talk about than I thought...

5) The Book of Leviathan by Peter Blegvad is a visual treat for anyone who likes to think. This is a collection of comic strips featuring Leviathan, a faceless and overly philosophical baby, his stuffed rabbit, and the family cat. The gang go on many adventures, including a long trip to Hell, in this dark comedy of a story.
6) Love, love, LOVE this video. It's the funniest thing I've seen in awhile.

8) Lastly, I got my computer back! I've spent the last couple of days trying to get it the way it was before I took it in to be fixed (minus the spyware, of course). I'm still trying to import all my email, as well as figuring out how to convert my external hard drive to a more stable format. It's a work in progress, that's for sure. But hopefully I will have some new photos to share soon and will be able to be a better blog commenter.
